Summer Wish List: A Straw Hat

I don't know about you, but what really makes summer official for me is not the end of the spring semester or even the warmer, sunnier weather. And I'm certainly not waiting until June 21 to start living in summer mode. No, I'm all ready for summer once it's Memorial Day. :)
So what am I looking forward to wearing this season? A lovely straw hat. Not only would one of these look adorable with a sundress and sandals, but they're great for added sun protection.

Here are a few of my favorites...

A classic straw boater hat with a bow. This would look cute with everything from dresses to shorts.
A face-flattering wider brimmed hat. I'd wear this by the poolside, in a retro-inspired bikini.
A contrast trim straw bowler hat. I love that you can adjust the brim to make it look like a fedora too.
Another straw boater hat. This one is my favorite. I'm definitely going to watch this one to see if it goes on sale eventually.
A straw cloche hat? Yes, please!
Yet another straw boater hat. This one is pretty simple, but I do like the dark blue ribbon.
Can you tell that I'm obsessed with boater hats? The big black flower adds such a unique touch. I'd want a plain hat so I could add different colored flowers.

I. WANT. THIS. A straw beret with polka dots and a bow? I seriously think I'm in love!

Lovely Things 5.25.11

I've always loved flowers, even though I've mentioned that I never like getting cut flowers as gifts because I suck at taking care of them. Nevertheless, I would want to have a garden someday, full of flowers in every shade of pink imaginable. I especially love rose gardens. This Lovely Things post reminds me of a rose garden at dusk.

Play Ball!

One of my favorite parts of late spring/summer is...baseball season! I'll admit, it's not exactly the most exciting sport to watch live, but there's just something about sitting in the stadium, nom nom nom-ing on peanuts, while cheering every time your favorite team gets a home run. I'm sure you can imagine my delight when I found this dress, which looks just like a vintage baseball jersey. Lucas and I are Angels fans, so this dress is definitely the wrong color combination. But you know what it does remind me of? Twilight baseball!

I'm all over the place!

I really am all over the place, in more ways than one. First of all, this was finals week. I didn't actually have any exams to take, but I had two projects and two papers to write. Now it's Friday afternoon, and believe it or not, I still have one more paper to write before I can officially start summer vacation. It's due at midnight, and yes, I am procrastinating.

Second announcement: Considering all the fashion/lifestyle/inspiration/social networking websites I'm on (Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Polyvore, we♥it, Chictopia, Weardrobe, & IFB), I hope you're not all sick of seeing my face yet. :) One of my friends from high school, Bernadette, inspired me to add another blogging platform to the list: Tumblr. I'll be using it for more random, non-style related posts, i.e. "musings on life" that don't really fit in on this blog. If you're interested, feel free to visit me at oh, hello gayle.

And now for my third, unrelated announcement. As you may have noticed, I haven't done a Style Post in a while. Don't worry, I haven't abandoned my personal style blog! I promise once my PICC line rash has healed a little bit (and doesn't look so much like a third degree burn), I'll have new Style Posts on this blog. In the meantime, I'll still be posting other things, fashion-related and otherwise. Again, thanks to all my readers for following me. You guys are the best!

Now if you'll excuse me, I should probably get started on my final paper...Happy Friday!

...xoxo

I could have a closet full of nothing but shades of pink and I'd be perfectly happy. Oh, and lace. Lots and lots of lace. I would wear this dress anywhere - to a brunch, an afternoon wedding, even just a walk in the park. I don't know about you, but I for one have no problem with dressing up for no reason.

Unending Love

It's no secret: Ruche makes amazingly beautiful clothes. I think they've really outdone themselves with their latest collection, Unending Love: A Southern Romance. All of these images make me want to wear gorgeous dresses and retro red lipstick every day.

All of these images remind me of "The Notebook", especially the first one. Like I said, I definitely wouldn't mind dressing like this every day. Now if only there were some way I could convince my boyfriend to wear a Newsie hat like Noah...

I Kicked Cancer's Ass

Yup, that's right. I. Am. Done. I finally had my last chemo treatment this morning. Now I just have one more appointment with my oncologist and I can receive a clean bill of health.

I know I should be excited, so forgive me if I don't sound like it at all. Believe me, I am celebrating on the inside. The me on the inside is doing a cute little happy dance as I type this. Right now though, I just feel tired. Of course, I have chemo-induced fatigue to thank for that.

Prior to today, I had thought that this last session would end in excitement. I had hoped to leave the infusion room with a huge smile on my face and plans to celebrate with a huge pizza and a beer. (After all, I haven't had any alcohol since Thanksgiving.) The reality was, I was still way too tired to do anything but stay in bed - not to mention the fact that I'm still not allowed to drink any alcohol for another six weeks.

As for the chemo session itself, I slept right though it, like I had done the last few times. Both my mom and Lucas were there with me the whole time, and I can imagine how boring it must have been for them to just sit there and watch me sleep. My nurse, Joy, only woke me up when it was time to remove my PICC line. It didn't hurt when I had my last one removed, but I had been afraid that it would hurt this time because my arm was more swollen and scabby. But nope, I didn't feel a thing. One, because she pulled it out faster than I could notice, and two, I was way too groggy to care.

I remember when I wrote my last LWC post, Even the Small Victories Count, how positive I was. I remember writing that getting through each week was a victory, how enjoying my weeks off was a victory, and how being able to eat a pulled pork sandwich without throwing up was a victory. Looking back now, I realize my ideas of "victory" were a little - I don't want to say selfish - but maybe superficial is the right word. After all, I am extremely lucky. Hodgkin's Lymphoma has over a 90% survival rate...and here I am, perfectly healthy apart from fatigue. Some people aren't so lucky. There are some people, younger than I am, who have had to deal with much worse things. And sadly, not everyone is as lucky as I am. Three days ago, I attended the memorial service of a classmate I've known since fifth grade, who was diagnosed with another type of cancer. He passed away at the age of 21. I know that people even younger than that die everyday, but frankly, 21 is still way too young.

If you had asked me several months ago what I expected to learn from this experience once I finished chemo, I regrettably would have focused on my appearance. I probably would have said something like, "I want to show people that I can look fabulous even while going through chemo." And I'll admit it, I was proud to run into people - new friends and old - who would tell me that I have perfect hair and that I must spend forever making the strands fall into place. Let's face it though, kicking cancer's ass is about so much more than deceiving people, making them believe you're healthy when you're really not. If you had asked me in the beginning what I expected to learn from this experience, I probably would have said something bitter like, "Having cancer sucks. And I could have learned that without getting it myself." Fortunately, I have a lot more insight about it now. As cliché as this may sound, what I learned is that the most important thing is to have hope and surround yourself with people who love and care about you. Whether you're religious or not, hope truly is a powerful thing. To anyone who is reading this who might still be going through treatment, remember, you are more beautiful than you realize. Hope is more beautiful than any vintage dress or wig you can put on.

I come from a family of great looking women...

This is a picture of me, my mom, and my grandma from Summer 2006 when we went on a cruise to Alaska. It's been five years and my mom and grandma still look exactly the same. I hope I can age at least half as gracefully. :)

I love you Mom and Nanay!

New Name, Same Great Style

After considering the possibilities all weekend, I have made my final decision my blog's new theme and new name. From here on out, Pen&Ink will be known as Pemberley Rose.

And guess what? My url finally matches my blog name too! Please be sure to update your readers and site links, if you link to me.

Thanks again for following me. I hope you all enjoy my new name and my new blog! :)

A rose by any other name...

I know I've said it more than once, but I will say it again: we♥it is amazing. It's a really great tool for defining your personal style. So I figured, what better place is there to find inspiration for my blog makeover? And here it is: my new blog will be pink, green, and brown. As for the theme, it will feature the things I love most: pink roses, old books, and Pride and Prejudice

[all images from we♥it];
MAC eyeshadow shades: Expensive Pink, Mylar, Humid, Bronze]

Yes, I will admit that I am slightly obsessive over details. Can you just imagine how crazy I'll be once it's time to start planning my wedding?

Anyway, I have decided on my theme, but I still have to choose a new name. I've gotten a few suggestions already, mostly from my good friend Ruth. Her suggestions include "Vintage Austen", "Austenite Fashion", "Vintage Heart", "Vintage at Heart", and "My Vintage Heart". All of these suggestions sound so pretty!

I've managed to come up with one of my own. I originally thought of "The Antique Rose". It sounds pretty to me, but then I started thinking that maybe it sounds a little too old fashioned. I'm not a little old lady! Then my best friend Mike suggested "The Ripest Rose", which I will admit sounds a lot sexier. He says the name implies "the ideal rose, the finest, flawless rose." :) I have awesome friends.

I'm still taking suggestions, so feel free to let me know what you think!

Ready for a Change

::sigh:: You know what? I really need a makeover. I'm not talking about a fashion or beauty makeover. No, what I really need is a blog makeover. This time, I don't think I'll be content with just changing my background or changing the fonts on my page or any other subtle changes. I really do mean blog makeover.

Why, you ask?

1) I'm starting to strongly dislike my blog's name. To be honest, I never really gave it much thought when I first started blogging. "Pen&Ink" was the first name I came up with, partly because it matched my first blog post. I guess I was just so excited about starting a blog that I didn't bother to really think through the naming process. I actually had thought about changing it before, but as you can see, 52 followers later, I never quite got around to it. So now I suppose you're wondering why I dislike my blog name now. Well...
  • It's way too common. I've found so many blogs with the name Pen & Ink, Pen and Ink, and other variations. And along that line...
  • My url doesn't match my blog name. Just about every version of my blog name was taken.
  • It sounds way too vanilla to me. Maybe I am over thinking this, but I want a name that grabs attention. Sorry, but Pen&Ink just doesn't sparkle to me anymore.
2) I'm getting bored with my blog's colors. Don't get me wrong, I still love teal...but it's not my favorite color. After the makeover, I want my blog to be pink and green. It makes sense, right? Not only are those my two favorite colors, but they're also the colors that I wear most often.

So there you go: two reasons (plus three sub reasons) why I really want to give my blog a makeover. I'm still brainstorming possibilities for new names, but I already have some criteria for that too:

1) No more ampersands (or the word "and"). I have nothing against ampersands, but like I said, I'm ready for a change.
2) It should be unique. And that simply means I don't want to see a million results when I google that name. :)
3) It should be reflective of me and the things I love. Vintage and antique-inspired fashion, nature, and Jane Austen novels...I suppose that's a good place to start.
4) It must match the url! Self-explanatory.
5) It must be a name that I truly, 110% love. Because I promise I'm only going to make this big of a change once.

Wow. Can you tell that I've really thought this through? Haha. I'm sorry if this was a boring post. This was really more for me to organize my thoughts and plans for change. Happy Blogging, everyone!

Style by Marina

Can you believe it's finally May? I'm so close to being done with this semester, which means I'll have more time for blogging! Do you want to know something else I haven't had much time for? Shopping. I honestly can't remember the last time I went to the mall. It's okay though. I still have the Style by Marina gift certificate that I won last month and I've been doing some online shopping. :) These are all my favorites...

Chiffon Strap Top - I love the ruffles on this top. I would wear this with tailored shorts and nude pumps in the spring/summer and wide leg trousers and a cardigan in the fall/winter.
Jersey Top Drawstring Dress - This is such a cute dress! And I'm always happy when I find clothes that have similar colors to my blog. This dress is only available in gray/charcoal now, but it is a nice color combination too.
Broderie Pattern Blouse - The scallops and cut out details on this blouse are so pretty and so delightfully vintage. I would wear this just like the model on the website, with black pants and lace up booties.
Heart Print Dress - How cute is this dress?! It has two things that I really love, polka dots and ruffles. I would wear this with gold bracelets and red flats or wedges.
Dot Print Blouse - More polka dots, yay! Believe it or not, I actually am brave enough to wear this blouse with nothing but a really pretty bra underneath. Of course I could also wear this with a black cami too.
Sheer Maxi Skirt - This would be a pretty skirt to wear with everything from blouses to tank tops and t-shirts. I'd also wear this as a dress with a gold rope belt and lace up Grecian sandals.
Lace Maxi Dress - I think this one is my favorite out of all my picks. I know it looks weird in the picture, but I am in love with the way the model is wearing it on the website. Black tights + colored sandals + brightly colored bra. Love!

I really, really, really wish I could get all of these. (My closet would be very happy, but my checking out? Not so much.)

So, dear readers, let me know your opinions. Which one should I get?
